Asher

This is our pretty boy, Asher. He is a 3 year old Korat mix and he has been with us for 2 1/2 years. He was a stray when we took him in. He's a big Mama's boy and loves to be petted, especially under his chin. He curls up with me on the couch to watch t.v. and he loves to sit on my lap while I am on the computer. He greets us at the door in the evenings after work. His favorite toy is a laser pointer. When he hears me getting it out of the drawer he comes running. When he is in a particularly good mood, he'll lay on the floor and drag himself to you. He's got a lot of attitude, but we wouldn't trade him for the world! - Kristen

Good morning all! Wow, is all I have to say! Asher is beauti...I mean, Handsome! Hopefully his momma will come visit and comment, so you can visit her site which has more great pix of Asher! I will find her site if she doesn't.

Hope everyone is doing better! Make sure the sick and injured give updates!! lol:) And be thinking about me, as I will be going w/my mom today to put my parents (one of them) beagle to sleep. It's gonna be an emotional morning. :( Sweetie (how original, huh?) is only 5 yrs. old and is the gold medalist escape from the yard winner! She has had an episode before where she was stiff and something was hurting her, but they gave her meds and it was fine. And they've been able to keep her in the yard lately. They've figured out all the places she was getting out. Well their neighbor started replacing part of her fence and undid the ties(chain link) and before my parents new it she started getting out again. Well, they figured out she was scooting under this 5 ft section of fence that the neighbor had undid the ties at the bottom of and blocked this area. Then she started getting real stiff not wanting to move, panting, all the syptoms of pain. So they took her in and the vet told them to give her an aspirin and if she wasn't better to bring her in. The next day she started yelping when she moved a certain way and falling over her front legs. So in again and the vet took x-rays and said she had calcium deposits on the vertabrae in her neck and that she would need surgery. My parents can't afford the thousands it would cost so the vet gave her a shot of prednisone and pain killers to take every 8-12 hours. He also said she could go completely paralized as well. Well, the shot and pain pills haven't seemed to touch her pain yesterday and she was continueing to fall over her front legs and dragging her front feet, like she was starting to go paralized. My mom called me last night and said Sweetie was just hollering out and came in and fell again and wouldn't get up. She said she can't watch her suffer any more and thinks, since they can't afford the surgery and the meds aren't helping her that she wants to take her in this morning. It just doesn't sound like anythings going to help her, med wise. And she is in too much pain. Well, I will end there, as I need a tissue and need to get the kids ready for school.

He is very beautiful. Another wonderful black cat. Love his "attitude".

First of all, Asher is a gorgeous cat, love these black cats with huge eyes. And a stray who found his humans. Bless you for taking him in, he will reward you. He already has, from reading what you wrote. In Asian culture, the cat does indeed pick it's human(s) and the black cat is the luckiest of all.
That said, Kat, you know, our hearts are with you this morning. Can't stay on the subject too long, but know that the entire Fuzz Pack, as avid animal lovers, our prayers go with you.

Kat our prayers are going your way. I am very sorry to hear about this. Tell your parents our thoughts are with them.

Kat, I'm so sorry to hear about Sweetie. It is so hard to take this step and I know we all feel very badly for you and your parents. Prayers to you and your family.

Asher is actually a charcoal grey. He is a Korat mix and I don't know much about the breed, but am planning on looking it up. I love his big gold eyes!

Thanks guys for your thoughts and prayers. I almost didn't bring it to the site, but I was upset and needed to. I'm not so close to Sweetie, although she's a sweet dog. You know what I mean. I just do care about her and can't bear to see her in the pain she's in! I'm going now! Tissue please!

Found a website about the Korat. The Korat is an ancient breed, naturally developed, native to Thailand. Their coat color is described as silver-blue and the this is the only color of the Korat. Pretty cool breed! Check out www.kciweb.org for more info on the breed.

Morning all,

Hi Asher! He is a gorgeous cat. I love the outdoor one with the green grass as the background to his beautiful gray coat.

1. Last night, I finished reading "Marley & Me". Good book. Get out the tissues, though. For tears of laughter and bittersweet sorrow.

2. More seriously, I weighed Maddie, Kona, and Wiley last night (I try to weigh them every 4-6 weeks). Kona lost .4 pound and is now at 11.8. Maddie gained .2 to a chunky 10.8. And Wiley also gained .2 to now weigh more than Kona at 12.0 pounds! Oh my. I don't think Wiley should weigh this much.

How do I get her to lose .5-1 pound? I hate to cut back on her food so much that she's hungry and sad all the time. Any advice or recommended web sites on how to help a cat lose weight? (Actually, I'd like Maddie to get down closer to at least 10 pounds. She probably should be more ~9 since she's a pretty small cat.)

On the flip side, I'm keeping an eye on Kona. He looks really good at this weight but I don't want him to keep losing. I have noticed that he doesn't seem to be eating quite as much. Otherwise, he seems just normal.

I know Kristen's Asher! Well, I don't know him, but I read Asher's mommy's blog. She already knows I'm completely in love with this gorgeous kitty!

Kristen, you should show the picture of Asher in the fridge :o)

donna,
I have a suggestion. They say people should eat smaller meals and more often. I wonder if that would work for the kitties.

Hi Danielle,

We kind of do that. We split their breakfast and their dinner in to 2 halves so they get 4 "meals" each day. I started doing this to try and make sure they each ate their own food.

We've been trying to cut back on how much each meal-half is for the girls but not for Kona. But Kona won't always eat all of his so I have to put it away so the girls won't eat their own and then wander to his bowl and also finish his off.

If I free-fed these fuzzballs, they'd be blimps! Both girls are the ones with the weight issue. Could it be due to having been spayed? And/or could it be because they were both strays and still fear not getting a next meal? Kona has never known that kind of hunger or homelessness.

Hi Karen, I'll have to backtrack through the archives and look at Grr's picture again. I don't remember her looking that big...unless the picture is of a "younger, slimmer" Grr? :-)

I know there are kitty "diet" foods out there but I hesitate to switch ours. I really like the Innova EVO food they're now getting. It has no grains in it and it just seems best for them. I don't think they make a low-cal version but I guess I could check.

I'll be taking Maddie to the vet in a couple of weeks for her annual exam and booster shot(s) and I'll ask our vet about kitty weight loss.

Talking about weight issues. All four of my kitties are different too. Well, Benji is getting more like Marley. Marley is a healthy 15.6 lbs. and the vet says he's fine, he just doesn't need to gain any more. But that he's not fat. Emma will be 2 in Aug. and she weighs just under 9 lbs. And Benji we weighed yesterday and remember he's not quite a year old. He will be one July 9th I think it is, and he weighs 12.2 lbs.! I don't think he's fat though. Look at his pic on PDJ and tell me what you think. He's pretty active, playing w/the fosters and his little mitten, formerly my son's. :) Anyway, Marley did weigh 17 lbs. and a few ounces. That was almost 4 years ago and we kept him on his same food and just very gradually cut back and like you Donna, fed him 4 small meals, instead of leaving food down. He gets about a 1/4 cup 4 times a day now. So, w/in 2 years he lost 2 lbs. which the vet said was great and that he was at a good weight now. He's a big kitty as is Benji. Emma is petite for a girl even. I think she was 8.12 at her last weigh in.

Sweetie is feeling better so far today. I went over and she is walking more relaxed, not so stiff and you could tell the pain pills were doing there job finally. But, her front legs are still not working properly. So, my mom wants to wait till tomorrow when my dad gets back. I think differently, but it's not my dog and I tried to tell her my opinion, but she wants to wait....so! I think it's just a matter time before she loses control of her front legs altogether and the pills are just taking some of the pain away. I'm sure they will go ahead and take her tomorrow, but I kinda wish it had been today. I just can't stand to see her hurting! And don't get me wrong, my parents love her and I guess it's just tough for my mom w/out my dad there. I won't go there as to how I feel about him leaving this on my mom as he went fishing, but ANYWAY! Thanks and thanks from my mom as well for all the thoughts and prayers for Sweetie girl.

Hello to everyone. I've been working late this week and I just finished catching up.

Donna, maybe you could get Wiley a new toy and exercise her more. My cat, Oreo, loves his wind up mousie. Also, he has a toy with feathers attached to a long string that is springy with elastic. I hold one end and dangle it in front of him and he gets a lot of exercise playing with it. I also feed him Iams for indoor cats. Ironically, my outside cat, is the tubby one. She must get a lot of exercise, because she is always hunting birds and moles and leaving them on my doorstep. Also, I feed her the same food, but she doesn't seem to be losing any weight.

Kat-Sorry to hear about Sweetie. Its a very difficult decision to make, especially since she is so young. There have been such great advances medically in what can be done for our pets. It just doesn't seem fair to know there is a treatment, but you can't afford it.

Asher is beautiful cat. I like the black ones too. He looks like he's ready for anything!

Hey Fuzz Family: On a complete "cat free" topic, does anyone know anyone who works at the law firm of: Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom -- in D.C. My hubbie is needing a contact there. Thanks! Sorry for the random "cat free" question.

Hello handsome Asher. You look like a velvet kitty. You are a very striking boy with your pretty eyes. So nice of your Mom to take you in and give you a good home.

Kat so sorry to hear about Sweetie even though I understand how your Mom feels. I'm procrastinating on Amber but I do know I have to do something soon. I also cannot afford hugh vet bills but I think I would like to have a blood test or sonagram to find out for sure if she has cancer. My thoughts and prayers are for your parents.

Wow, thank you for all the comments! Asher thanks you too!

I mentioned that he is a Korat mix...this is what I think he is...it has never been determined for sure though. Just everything about him matches the Korat breed profil to a "T".

Anyway, he is definitely a lot of fun and we love him to death!

I'd love it if you stopped by to check out my site. I've got a little Asher photo album there as well.

Take care everyone!
